John Roland Dewey

John Roland Dewey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, moved from this life, to life eternal, surrounded by family, on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, after a long struggle with Parkinson's and declining health. John lived a life filled with the joy of family and numerous friends, and as a faithful servant of the church. Inurnment is scheduled for 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28, at the Capay Cemetery, 24727 County Road 22, Esparto. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1, at the Woodland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 509 College St., Woodland, under the direction of Pastor Larry Love.
Born in Gering, Neb., to Edwin and Iva Dewey on May 28, 1927, John was the youngest of 10 children. When he was an early teen, his family moved to Nyssa, Ore., where John completed high school. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army in 1946, where he was a paratrooper and in Japan during the U.S. occupation. After the Army, he returned to Nyssa, and began to work in farming. Following his return to Nyssa, he married Marian Daly and during their life together, they raised five children. John remarried in 1981 to Gloria (Garrison) Robertson and became stepfather to three sons. John received a bachelor's degree from Northwest Christian College in Oregon and a Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary (Butler University) in Indiana. He spent 40 years as a pastoral minister and served churches in Oregon, Indiana, Illinois, Idaho and throughout California. He left a legacy of loving ministry to his family and the churches he served.
John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Gloria Dewey; children Kenneth Dewey and wife Sue, Donald Dewey and wife Susan, Diana (Dewey) Miller and husband Johnny, Cynthia (Dewey) Walker and husband Jim, John Dewey and wife Deseree; stepsons Randall Robertson and wife Nancy, Rodney Robertson and wife Sheri, and Richard Robertson. He is also survived by grandchildren Jeffrey Dewey, Noah Dewey and wife Ashley, Leah Dewey, Melissa Cook and husband Ben, Shaun Miller, Ryan Miller and wife Amanda, Samantha Walker, Kristin Dewey, Austin Dewey, Jake Dewey, Kathryn Robertson, Meghan Robertson, Amanda Robertson, Sophia Robertson, Scott Robertson, and Ross Robertson; and four great-grandchildren, Lucius Dewey, Tyler Cook, Michaela Cook, and Jordyn Miller. His brother, Robert Dewey and wife Carol, and many loving nieces and nephews also survive him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Iva Dewey; brothers Louis, Edwin, Frank, Dale, and Marvin Dewey; and sisters Lois Dewey, Thelma Matlock and Audrey Henry.
