Mary Anne (Peggy) Wood Obituary
May 12, 1921 Dec. 25, 2016

Mary Anne (Peggy) Wood passed away quietly at home with family by her side on Christmas Day, at the age of 95. She was a lifelong resident of Yolo County. She was the daughter of Ben G. and Aliece Stephens, and the granddaughter of George D. Stephens, an early pioneer settler in Western Yolo County. She was also the great granddaughter of John Andrew DeVilbiss, builder of the DeVilbiss Hotel (The Buckhorn) in Winters.

Mary Anne was the last survivor of five children. She retired from the Esparto School District in 1983, after 23 years of service, and was known by many. She shared her passion of cooking and baking with family and friends and loved family work days and gatherings on the Wood Ranch. She enjoyed watching the wildlife from her sun porch, Sudoku puzzles, and making her famous enchilada sauce and beaten chocolate cake.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice, on Thanksgiving Day 2009, and their son, Fulton on March 2, 1958. She and her husband celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on the Ranch with family and friends in 2009. Mary Anne is survived by her son, Philip Wood (Linda); daughter, Carol Grein; grandchildren, Joel Grein, Glori Morro (Joe), Darin Grein, Philip Wood Jr., John Wood (Megan); great grandchildren, Amanda and Aliece Grein and Shelby and Brandon Wood.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 6, at the Capay Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Scout Cabin in Esparto.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made directly to the Esparto Fire Department, PO Box 366, 16960 Yolo Ave., Esparto 95627 or to an organization of the donor's choice.
