Ruth Ann Lucas
March 1961 - October 2013
Ruth Ann Lucas passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 52. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Ruth Ann was a wonderful, Christian woman, with a loving heart, compassionate soul, and a zest for life.
Ruth Ann was born March 29, 1961 in Sacramento. She moved with her family to Woodland in 1962, where she grew up and was highly active in sports, community, church, and Woodland's schools. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1979. Ruth Ann was educated at Bethany Bible College, Sacramento State University, and graduated from California State University East Bay.
Ruth Ann was a devout Christian all her life, with a strong foundation in the Bible. She was deeply involved in her church, and contributed significantly to Christian outreach. She was always the first to volunteer, and worked diligently with a giving heart to both church and community activities.
She spent much of her life as an educator. When her health permitted, she worked in different educational capacities as a teacher and as a private tutor. In addition, she worked for the Forest Service in Yosemite Valley and Lake Tahoe, and for a short time at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort.
In her youth, Ruth Ann loved sports and was active in many team activities. For example, she was on the sports teams in basketball, softball and volleyball, and a camp counselor at Camp Packer Creek with the YMCA.
A constant in Ruth Ann's life was a deep love for the mountains. She loved to backpack, ski, and spend time in the Sierras. Later in life, she was happiest hiking mountain trails with her constant companion dog Chelsea. A great comfort to her family and friends is that Ruth Ann was able to spend her last years living close to the forest in Lake Tahoe.
Ruth Ann loved and cherished her family. Ruth Ann is survived by her mother, Carlene Lucas; her brothers Ralph Lucas (Bobbie Reagan) and Wes (Elisabet) Lucas; and nieces Kristen (Michael) Schmutz, Casey Lucas (Josh Daiek), Sarah Lucas, and Christina Lucas. Ruth Ann is also survived by her aunts Olivia Welch, Glenda Elvy, and Florence Holmes; and many cousins, and of course by her constant companion, service dog Chelsea. She was preceded in death by her father Glenn Lucas; her maternal grandparents Ruth and Cecil Walter; and paternal grandparents Glenn and Mildred Lucas.
There will be a service to celebrate Ruth Ann's life at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Woodland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 509 College St., Woodland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Ruth Ann to be given to Stanford Medical Center (
), SPCA (
), or charity of the donors' choice.
