Virgie 'Imogene' Austin

Virgie "Imogene" Austin passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013 at the age of 84 in Woodland. Imogene was born in Ryker, Arkansas on Jan. 30, 1929 and moved to Knights Landing at the age of 7 with her parents George and Zona Sparks. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1946 then married the love of her life, Dwight Austin on Feb. 2, 1947.
After moving to Arkansas and ranching for five years, they returned to Woodland in 1955 where they made their home. Imogene loved to garden and canned much of the harvest, especially the tomatoes and juicing the pomegranates to make jelly. Known to family for her great pies, she was always asked to bake a favorite for birthdays, special occasions and holidays. She also loved to travel and camp in the 5th wheel with Dwight, traveling with relatives and friends to as far away as Alaska.
Besides being a homemaker, Imogene learned to keep the books for the family business, Austin Electric, to help her husband.
Imogene is survived by her husband Dwight Austin; daughter Carol Austin of Woodland, grandsons Justin Austin (wife Denise) of El Cajon, Jarrod Austin of Woodland; two great-grandchildren, Payton Austin and Lexi Austin; brother Tim Sparks of Port Orford, Ore.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her son Randy Austin.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 28, at McNary's Funeral Chapel 458 College St., Woodland. A graveside service will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 CR-22, Woodland.
