Virginia Marcia Duncan Newcom, 95, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at her daughter's home in Woodland. Virginia was the last surviving member of Capay Valley pioneers, Wyatt Godfrey Duncan and Marcia May Wood Duncan and the youngest of six children.
Virginia was born on March 30, 1918, at her aunt's home in Sacramento. She graduated from Esparto High School in 1936 and studied interior design and art at Sacramento Junior College. In 1937 she married John E. Bowman of Winters and together they had a daughter, Jeanette. John was tragically taken from the family in 1952. Virginia and Jeanette moved from their home in Sonoma to Woodland where she became credit manager for Montgomery Ward on Main Street. In 1954 Virginia married Jack G. Curnow and their marriage would last 38 years until his death in 1992.
On Valentine's Day in 1995, Virginia married Edgar Newcom in Reno and the two enjoyed the next 11 years traveling extensively in their motorhome and enjoying several cruises together until his passing in 2006 at the age of 90.
Virginia was one of the first residents of the Leisureville Mobile Home Park where her friends called her "Ginnie." She was an accomplished organist, enjoyed oil painting and gardening. As her health started to decline her friends in the park watched over her, prayed with her, brought her food, the mail and newspaper and had great conversations with her. Her favorite topic was Capay Valley where she grew up. She took pride that she was Dr. Jeffrey Yee's first patient and attributed her long life to him and the hugs she received from Troy Fajerson, P.A., both of Woodland Clinic.
Virginia is survived by her daughter Jeanette Koster (Gary) of Woodland; stepdaughters Fay Larsen of San Jose, Marriott Wilcox of Lake Tahoe, Diann Lewis (Walter) of Isleton, Leslie Koopen (Jerry) of Dixon and Tina Dunham of Vacaville; grandson Rick Koster (Sueann); granddaughter Michelle Galbraith (Mitch); great-grandchildren Jack and Piper Galbraith of Los Altos; nieces Marlene Wehr, and Lila Sills; nephews Benjamin, Sterling, Dale, John, Dennis and Charles Duncan and Bill Douglass; cousin Iola Duncan Tandy of Madison and her dear friend Zella Dudley. She was preceded in death by her three husbands; twin brothers Roy and Ray Duncan and infant brother Sterling and her sisters Lila Duncan Cline and Gertrude Duncan Tandy.
A private funeral service was held at Capay Cemetery in Esparto, interment in the Duncan family plot. Donations can be made in Virginia's name to Yolo Hospice, PO Box 1014, Davis, 95617; Woodland United Fellowship, c/o Pastor Morgan, 240 N. West St., Woodland, 95695; or a
