Melvin 'Mel' Thomas Young
Nov. 18, 1921 - March 13, 2014

Melvin "Mel" Thomas Young, 92, of Woodland, died at home on Thursday, March 13, 2014. Born on Nov. 18, 1921, in Douglass, Kan., Mel had lived in Woodland for 54 years. He and his to brothers co-owned ACME Furniture which later moved to Main Street and became Young's Discount Store. He was a lifetime member of the Lion's Club, serving for 65 years; as well as the Elks Lodge and American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army as a private first class, and received a Good Conduct Medal of Honor.
Mel is survived by his wife of 69 years, Florence "Flo" Young; daughter Judy Schomber; four grandchildren, John Ray, Tommy Reeves, Paul Ray and wife Donna, and Katrina Lane and husband Brian, as well as by six great-grandchildren, and two great- great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard in 2012, and Wilbur in 2004; sisters-in-law, Sheila and Allena in 2004, daughter Connie in 2002, and mother Pearl in 1986.
A memorial will be announced at a later date. Burial is scheduled for Monument Hill Memorial Park. Donations in his name can be made to a charity of the donors' choice. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
