Sept. 24, 1932 – June 6, 2013
It is with heavy hearts but joy filled memories that we announce the passing of our beloved family Matriarch, Myrle Griffin. Myrle Laree (Stewart) Griffin was born to Wilbur and Bertha Stewart in Napa on Sept. 24, 1932. As the eldest ranch hand of four girls and a boy, Myrle could fix a fence, herd cattle, stack hay, and operate a tractor. However, despite her deep-rooted farm knowledge she chose to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a nurse. She enrolled in the Santa Rosa Junior College registered nursing program in 1949, and began both lifelong friendships with her colleagues, and a life of helping people.
On one lucky day she met Irvin Leroy Griffin. They were a perfect match and were soon married. At the time she was fulfilling a dream, which was to take pilot lessons. Such hair-raising ideas did not appeal to "Corky" as he was then known, so she turned in her wings to become a Mom. Soon to follow were three children: Mike (Denise), Dianne (Casey) O'Hair, and Karen.
Myrle worked as a nurse, primarily in surgery, for more than 30 years. She began nursing at Colusa Hospital, but the majority of her career was at Woodland Memorial Hospital. After her retirement she continued to provide care in the form of love, guidance, and attention to her friends and family. Knowing Myrle was knowing someone who truly cared about you.
Myrle was delighted to change her name to Granny when the grandbabies arrived. Rounding out a field of five were Kimberly and Brad Griffin, and Brian, Katelyn, and Brett O'Hair. Love was not in short supply, it was passed around freely. Granny adored her family.
"Granny" did not own a rocking chair. If a car was going somewhere, she wanted to be in it. Myrle was very active in running her family, and keeping up with her many friends.
Myrle passed suddenly on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Woodland Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family and a very caring group of nurses.
Friends and family are welcome to a reception in her honor to be held at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East St., this Thursday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting donations in Myrle's name to Stollwood Convalescent Hospital, 135 Woodland Ave., Woodland, 95695; or Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617.
