Williamson, Elma* - Rhinebeck
Elma (Staley) Williamson RHINEBECK- Elma (Staley) Williamson, 94, quietly passed away at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. A long time resident of Rhinebeck, Elma was the daughter of H. Henry Staley and Lucy (Speckenbach) Staley. Growing up and attending the Rhinebeck schools, Elma helped her grandparents and parents run the Cottage Farm boarding house on Mt. Rutsen Rd. After attending the University of Maryland, Elma took her degree to New York City and entered the world of magazine publishing where she worked for Esquire Magazine as an advertising contract and credit manager. While working in the city, she met and married Maurice (Bill) Williamson, Jr., also in the publication business. Together they shared a joy of traveling and collecting antiques. Elma excelled learning new things and was very proud about designing and drawing up blue prints for their future retirement home back in Rhinebeck. Outside their new house, you could always find Elma cultivating and nurturing her colorful gardens and landscape projects. However, Elma’s greatest love was her knowledge and continuing research of the town and village of Rhinebeck and the surrounding areas. She was a walking treasure trove of Rhinebeck history and put that background into writing numerous articles for the Rhinebeck Historical Society as well as holding many different offices within the society including president. Elmas last years were spent in the wonderful care of the Baptist Home at Brookmeade. While there, Elma was instrumental in getting the Terraces at Brookmeade up and running as an assisted living facility. Our family is very grateful to all those involved in seeing to Elmas comfort during her final days. Elma was predeceased by her husband, Bill and is survived by her stepchildren Carol Baseley, David Williamson, and Scott Williamson, along with eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Dapson & Chestney Funeral Home in Rhinebeck with a private family service and burial later this spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Rhinebeck Historical Society at P.O. Box 291, Rhinebeck, N.Y., 12572. Online messages of condolence can be made by visiting Dapsonchestney.com
