James H. Mergendahl Jr.

James H. Mergendahl, Jr. NEW PALTZ - James H. Mergendahl, Jr., 75, of Apple Lane and formerly of Bennett Ave. in Saugerties died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 16, 1939 in Saugerties he was the son of the late James and Blanche Washburn Mergendahl. A Veteran of the Vietnam War he served in the U.S. Army. He was employed for over 17 years at IBM in Kingston retiring in 1993. Active in the community he was a Eagle Scout with Troop 32 in Saugerties and was the 1st recipient of the God and Country Award. He joined the Saugerties Fire Company and was a member of the CA Lynch Hose Co. where he was a member for over 50 years and served as a Past President. In 1978 he became Chief of the Saugerties Fire Department and was one of the firematic officers fighting the Cantine Mill fire that destroyed the mill property. He was also a member of the Saugerties Exempts Fireman’s Association. Family was important to him and he and his wife raised four Daughters and he pitched in and assisted his wife with the Girl Scouts particularly during the Girl Scout Cookie Fundraiser. He was a member of the Saugerties Bowlers Club Thursday Night Mens League. Survivors include his wife, the former Merrily DeAngelis, with whom he celebrated their 51st Wedding Anniversary. Four Daughters: Lisa and her companion, Antonio Bruno of Saugerties, Donna Dow of Albany, Kelly and her husband, John Fracasse of New Paltz, and Kathy Combs and her companion Anthony Prizzia of Highland. Two Brothers: William “Bill” Mergendahl of Saugerties and Jack Mergendahl of Missouri. One Sister: Blanchette Kellerhouse of Grand Gorge. Five Grandchildren: Karisa Finch, Jonathan Dow, Alexis Combs, Landon Fracasse and Ava Prizzia. Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. His Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. Of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Friends will be received Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home. Interment with military honors by the Saugerties American Legion and firematic services by the Saugerties Fire Department will be held in the Blue Mt. Cemetery.
