Joseph Cavanna

Joseph Cavanna RED HOOK - Joseph Cavanna, 91, of Red Hook, passed away on Sat., June 21, 2014 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. Born on Aug. 22, 1922, in Piacenza, Italy, he was the son of the late Pietro and Clementina (Maruffi) Cavanna. Joe was a soldier for the Italian Army and served during World War II. During the war he was captured and was a German prisoner of war. Following World War II, Joe immigrated to America and worked as a mason with the Laborer’s International Union of North America in New York City until his retirement. He was a Life Member of the Laborer’s Union and the Societa Val Trebbia E Val Nure. Joseph married Anna Taravella on May 11, 1963 at Sacred Heart Church in Cambria Heights, N.Y., and Anna predeceased him on June 21, 2012. Joe was an avid gardener and a longtime New York Yankees fan. He is survived by his daughter; Dr. Angela Cavanna of Elizaville, a sister; Luisa Camia of Italy, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister; Giovanna Cavanna, and two brothers; Benvenuto and Paul Cavanna. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 27th, 2014 at St. Christopher’s Church, Red Hook, N.Y. Entombment will be held on Sat., June 28th, at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale. Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes on Thursday, June 26th, 2014 from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 PM.
