Peter Erle Battelle

Peter Erle Battelle WILLISTON, VT. - Peter Erle Battelle of Oak Hill Road in Williston, Vt., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013. He was 75 years of age. Born on Oct. 7, 1938 in Kingston, Peter was the son of Erle and Virginia Smith Battelle, residents of Alligerville, N.Y. from 1940 to 1954. Peter attended Kingston High School from 1951-1954 and was a 1956 graduate of Blair Academy in N.J., a 1960 graduate of Middlebury College, and a 1963 graduate of Columbia University with a Masters in Business and Accounting. Following active duty in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer, Peter began his career at Price Waterhouse in New York City. Peter joined the faculty at the University of Vermont where he taught accounting for 37 years. He served on Finance and Budget, Audit, Investments, and Intercollegiate Athletics Committees. He also took teaching and professional sebbaticals in Mexico City and Wirtschafts-Universitat in Vienna, Austria. He served as a student advisor in Study Abroad programs which Peter helped to develop between UVM and universities abroad. Finally, he served for 16 years on the Board of Directors of the CVU School District as member and chairman. Peter and Jean raised four great scholar-athletes, one a state champion gymnast, all of whom played varsity soccer at Middlebury, one of whom competed in four Olympic Games, all of which Pete and Jean attended, and one of whom was just awarded a doctorate in physics at Colorado School of Mines. Pete himself was a golf team captain at Blair but love most the innumerable pick-up games of basketball and soccer in which he engaged at venues in and around the University. He stayed in shape bike riding, cross-country skiing, and hiking. Following retirement in 2007, Pete and Jean spent a year traveling and camping throughout the U.S., visiting sources of major rivers throughout the country, visiting national parks, and their children and grandchildren, all of whom had migrated west, one all the way to Australia. Peter is survived by his wife Jean of 52 years; their four children,Torey (Don) Semi of Denver, Colo., Tom (Leanne)of Kentfield, Calif., Ann (Sascha) Ayad of Louisville, Colo., and Claire Battelle of Sydney, Australia; grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Nick Battelle of Kentfield, Calif. and Emmy and Anabel Ayad of Louisville, Colo.; brother, Anthony Battelle (Taya) of Brookline, Mass.; sister-in-law, Dorie Battelle of White Stone, Va.; three nieces and a nephew; sisters-in-law, Donna Sethi of New York City and Susan Bobilin of Orange, Mass.; and brother-in-law, William Emrich of Tampa, Fla. Peter was predeceased by his parents and his brother Nicholas. A celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Friday, Dec. 20,2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Federated Church in Williston, Vt. , at the corner of Rt. 2 and N. Williston Road. Peter’s family will be forever indebted to the many health care professionals at Burlington Health and Rehab, Fanny Allen Rehab, and Fletcher Allen Health Care, whose tireless efforts to care for and rehabilitate Peter greatly eased his family’s concerns and gave Peter a quality of life far beyond what might have been expected. The family asks that contributions in lieu of flowers be sent to one of these institutions.
