My Uncle Joe was always larger than life, a big frog in the little pond that is Kingston, and I loved him like I loved my own father. He was the life of the party wherever he went, smoking big cigars, playing the trumpet as wildly as any professional jazzman, and always keeping everyone around him laughing. I never looked forward to anything in life like I looked forward to spending time with him and my cousins at the little piece of paradise in the Catskills, complete with trout brook, where he built his hunting camp. When I was a kid he filled my head with stories of his fishing and hunting exploits, as well as his adventures (including his wounding and recovery) in the Pacific as a SeaBee in WWII (Okinawa and China), and he fired my imagination as no one else in this life ever has. A great outdoorsman, he took my cousin Dave and I to the Chimney Hole on exciting moonlit nights to fish for walleye, and patiently rowed us all over the Ashokan Reservoir, trolling flatfish, letting us catch all the smallmouth bass while he did the work. It wasn't until I had my own kids that I realized what a sacrifice that was for him, to basically give up his own fishing pleasure so we could learn and experience the joys the outdoors had to offer. He filled me with wonder and love for nature, taught me by example to dance to my own drum, and saved me from becoming a New England trout snob. He had an enormous influence on my choosing a career as a wildlife biologist and outdoor writer, and I never would have been as good at either had he not been there for me in my formative years. I miss him terribly, but have faith that he is in a better place, likely hunting pheasant with Papa and his beloved dog, Pal, or maybe trout fishing with my Dad. My condolences to all who knew him: our lives are now a little impoverished with his loss, but our lives are much better lived for having known him...

I will miss my dear Godfather and Uncle so much. His sense of humor was unmatched. I can still picture him in the "big living room" on Johnston Avenue, playing the trumpet, or smoking his cigar and making us kids laugh and laugh. And you always made sure to give me your empty cigar holders for my dimes. Your presence was larger than life when I was a little girl and always at your house. I'll miss you Uncle Joe but I will always picture you laughing and happy and feeling good. God bless you forever. I hope you and my Dad are playing some cards and having a few laughs somewhere with Papa. Xoxox to all of my cousins and my dearest Aunt Jackie. Love Kathy, Alex, Marina and Sam too.
