NEW PALTZ- Dr. Joseph A. Castellana, 88, a longtime resident of New Paltz, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, N.Y., on Wednesday, July 31, 2013.
Born on May 12, 1925 in the Bronx, he was the son of Joseph and Philomena Castellana.
Joe graduated from New Paltz High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S.
World War II
. He was a Battle of the Bulge veteran as a member of the 99th infantry. He graduated from the State Teachers College at New Paltz in 1948 and received his M.Ed. and Ed.D. from Columbia University Teachers College by 1958. His career as a Professor of Education spanned 35 years at the College of Saint Rose, Siena College, and the State University of New York at New Paltz. In his retirement, he attended the American Academy of the Dramatic Arts, New York, NY and was a member of the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG). His stage and screen credits include leading roles in the SUNY New Paltz Summer Repertory Theatre, CBS's "Dellaventura" with Danny Aiello, the Gene Frankel Theatre - N.Y.C., and HBO's "The Soprano's".
Joe was also an accomplished lifelong musician and professional jazz drummer. Known as the "Swinging Swinging Professor" among his peers, he hosted and moderated a series of drumming clinics at the College of Saint Rose with Joe Moriello of the Dave Brubeck Quartet sponsored by the Ludwig Drum Co. He performed with the Roger Thorpe Jazz Ensemble/Band at the Mohonk Mountain House Resort in New Paltz for many years. Joe had an extraordinary life and was truly a member of the "Greatest Generation", he will be sorely missed by both friends and family alike.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margarete of New Paltz, ; his children, Lisa Castellana, Gregory Castellana, and Marcia Castellana of New Paltz, Dr. Lance Castellana and his wife, Carol, of Valatie, Darryl Castellana and his wife, Marianne, of New Paltz, Judith Donovan and her husband, Jacques, of Rhinebeck, Diane Stowell of Highland, Sharon VanDuser and her husband Kirk, of Walkill, Douglas Castellana and his wife Donna, of Walkill; his cherished grandchildren: Kevin Castellana, Matthew Castellana, Kathryn Hill and her husband, George, of Kingston, Connor Donovan, Vaughn Donovan, Sara Stowell, Rachel Stowell, Kyle VanDuser, Christopher VanDuser, Ashley Castellana, Christine Castellana, Michael Castellana, and Kylie Castellana; and great-grandchildren, Brayden Lumbard, Sharley Lumbard, and Noelle Marino. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his son, Kevin Castellana, and his brothers, Luca and Teddy Castellana.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at the Copeland Funeral Home, 162 South Putt Corners Rd., New Paltz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 at St. Joseph's Church, New Paltz, with burial immediately following at St. Charles Borromeo cemetery, Gardiner, N.Y.
