SAUGERTIES- Gerard R. Diers, Sr., 82, of Kings Highway, Saugerties, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at home surrounded by his family.

Born July 23, 1931 in Kingston, he was a son of the late Francis G. and Gladys V. (Haines) Diers.
Gerard served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. A union electrician, he was employed by the IBEW Local 363 in New City retiring in 1993. He was also a former Ulster County Deputy Sheriff, Kingston Professional Firefighter, past Commander of Joyce-Schirick Post 1386 Veterans of Foreign Wars where he was also a member of the Color Guard and a past commander of the Douglas L. Cordo Post 1748 American Legion. He was a former Army Reservist, a member of the Kingston Veterans Association, a car enthusiast, and enjoyed hot rods and motorcycles.
Surviving are his children, Gerard R. Diers, Jr. (Melissa Staccio) of Saugerties, Jami L. Phillips and her husband Darrell of Robbinsville, N.C., Kelly L. Reif and her husband John of Chandler, Ariz., and Susan L. Gambino and her husband Ronni of Mt. Marion; his brother and sisters, Richard Diers, Veronica Ashdown, Rosemary Rittle and Carol Restorff; and his grandchildren, Marsie Brugman, Michael Diers, Brett Diers, Shannon O'Brien, Jared Diers, Kristi Diers, Jacob Diers, Rebecca Gulick, Jessica Beasley, Kathryn Gulick, Sarah Jones, Erin Phillips, Magan Sellers, Josef Reif, Cassidy Reif, Chase Reif, Ryan Gambino, Justyna Staccio, Dylan Gambino and Nicholas Gambino. 23 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, also survive.
His wife, Marlene A. (Showers) Diers; his son, Robert F. Diers; brother, James Diers; and sisters, Patricia White and Florence Taylor, all died previously.
Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc. 27 Smith Avenue. www.jv leahyfh.com Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Bernard C. Gray, Certified Funeral Celebrant officiating. Burial with military honors in Mount Marion Cemetery.
