Harold Eugene “Hal” Chapman Jr. SHOKAN - Harold Eugene “Hal” Chapman Jr., 87, of Dubois Rd. Shokan, died Thursday July 10, 2014 at Kingston Hospital. Born Feb. 11, 1927, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Gladys Lantz Chapman of Worcester Massachusetts. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard fighting in the Pacific theater the last year of World War 2. He also served in the Korean conflict. On Dec. 17, 1949 Harold married “the love of his life”, Katherine Elizabeth LeCompte of Lakewood N.J. In Dec. of 2013 they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Harold is survived by his wife Katherine, and four sons, Glenn and his wife Linda of Kingston, Steve and his wife Linda of Cape Coral Fla., Brian of Naperville Ill., and James and his wife Eileen of Shokan. Four grandsons, Brady, Paul, Christopher, Brett, and one granddaughter Brooke. And three great-grandsons, Ian, Dominic and David. Harold served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician for 20 years followed by 18 years at IBM Kingston and Poughkeepsie. He retired from IBM in 1982. Harold was very proud of his Naval service and was rarely seen not wearing one of his U.S. Navy baseball style caps. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1627, and the VFW. The family will receive friends at Lasher Funeral Home 100 Tinker St. Woodstock from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday July 15. A service will be conducted at the Lasher Funeral Home. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Reservoir United Methodist Church, or the Olive Food Pantry, Olive Bridge N.Y. 12461.
