John J. “Red” Curran HURLEY- John J. “Red” Curran, of Hurley passed away peacefully at home early Wednesday morning Feb. 20, 2013. Born April 8, 1930 in East Braintree, MA, he is the son of the late Michael and Mary Curran of East Braintree, MA. John or “Red” as he was affectionately called, served in the United States Air Force for twenty eight years retiring with an honorable discharge in 1977 as a Chief Master Sergeant. He served in Europe, Japan and Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart for bravery in combat. During his long military career, he earned numerous medals and commendations. After retirement from the Air Force, he took a civilian position at West Point Military Academy and after fifteen years of service, was awarded the Department of the Army Civilian Award. Red was known for his love of his family, his country and animals especially his cat Spencer. Surviving is his wife of sixty one years, Yvonne Curran; son Michael Curran and his companion Sandy Coons; grandson Shawn Curran and his wife Danielle; great-grandson, Kaiden Curran all of Kingston; his sister, Jean DeStephano and her husband Bill of East Braintree, MA. His sisters, Mary Blanchard, Cecila Bates and Lorraine Spano all died previously. A special thanks to his aid Sari and Hospice Nurses for the care of John. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc. 27 Smith Avenue. www.jvleahyfh.com Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
