William Overfield Smith Sr. RED HOOK- William Overfield Smith Sr., 91, of Red Hook, passed away peacefully in the arms of his youngest son and caregiver, David, on Oct. 26, 2012. Born, April 30, 1921 in Hyde Park, Bill was the son of the late William Henry Smith and the late Phebe L. Morse Smith, and brother to 13 siblings. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife, Anna May Feller Smith, his siblings, Raymond H. Smith, Robert E. Smith, Marion Fifield, Leona J. Smith Wyant, Lulu F. Smith, Doris Mae Turk, Abram V. Smith, Dorothy Denyke, Ruth Rush, and by his loyal friend and companion, Florence Mae Dubois. Bill was the loving and devoted husband to his wife, Anna May, supportive and loving father of William O. Smith Jr.(Saratoga Springs), Linda Ann Smith Theisen (Greensboro, N.C.), David R. Smith (Kingston), grandfather of Lisa M. Smith Wall (St. Petersburg, Fla.), William O. Smith, III (Wallkill), Stephanie H. Smith (Walden), Sheri L. Theisen (Wake Forest, N.C.), Evan M. Smith (Kingston), Lindsay E. Smith (Kingston), and great-grandfather to Andrew T. Barone, Jr., Dylan A. Barone, and Isabella M. Barone all of Walden, and loving father-in-law to Deborah Hester-Smith (Kingston), Louise Gilgallon Smith (Saratoga Springs), and Charles E. Theisen (Greensboro, N.C.). Bill is also survived by his two brothers: Alfred E. Smith (Staatsburg); Charles Smith (Hyde Park); and his sister, Helen M. Farley (Wappingers Falls) along with many nieces and nephews. Bill always enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing, bowling, hunting, golfing, playing cards, metal detecting, sketching, drawing and painting pictures, flying Radio-Controlled planes, walking, collecting coins, doing crosswords, assembling puzzles, and doing crafts with his late wife for the United Methodist Church Holly Day Bazaar. Bill is a member in good standing of "the Greatest Generation" serving his country during World War II (as did four of his brothers from Staatsburg) flying 29 missions in the 8th Air Force, Second Air Division, 389th Bombardment Group, 564th and 566th Bombardment Squadrons in the European theatre in the lead plane of various B-24 Liberators as a Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force performing as a radio operator, radio mechanic, and back-up gunner. A 29 year faithful employee of IBM, Kingston retiring in 1986 as a Sr. Associate Systems Analyst, Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church of Red Hook, the Red Hook Methodist Men's Club, the Methodist Church Choir, the Red Hook Hendrick Hudson Lodge #875, and the Red Hook Volunteer Fire Company. Enjoying more than 70 years of bowling, including setting pins at the Staatsburg Fire House, Bill bowled at local establishments including Rhinebeck Recreation, 9G lanes, Ro-Lin Lanes, Mid-City Lanes, Ferraro's Bowlerama, and Hoe-Bowl-on-the-Hill. Bill and his wife, Anna May, often accompanied and rooted for their sons David and Bill at Bowling league and tournament engagements as well as bowling in the Northern Dutchess Tournament Association and several bowling leagues over the years. Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, Thursday, Nov. 1st, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Hendrick Hudson Masonic Lodge will hold services at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2nd, at the Red Hook United Methodist Church, Red Hook. My grandfather was the best. He was a quiet respectful man who enjoyed his family and life. Heaven gained an angel Friday! We love you Grampy!

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Uncle Bill. My grandmother (Leona) just spoke so fondly of him and even gave me two of his painting that hang proudly in my home. My sympathy to the entire family.
