Candace ‘Candy’ Staiger Backstrom Highmount- Candace “Candy” Staiger Backstrom, 67 of Roaring Brook Rd. died Sunday March 9, 2014 surrounded by her family at her residence. She was born June 30, 1946 daughter of the late John and Mary Wright Staiger. She was an Onteora High School graduate, who served over twenty years as legal secretary to attorneys in Kingston including: Mr. William Pretsch, Mr. Eli Basch, and Mr. Alfred Mainetti. She was an avid reader, and traveled extensively with her husband on business trips. She lived in Florida for sometime, and commuted to Texas frequently to see Klaus. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, as expressed in the birds she fed, her flower gardens, and her animals. She was an excellent cook, and deemed the ‘official’ birthday cake maker for the family. Her family shared, that the radiance of her kindness and beauty were nonpareil. Surviving are her husband Klaus, daughter Lisa and her husband Adair Dash, stepsons: Topsi and Osku Backstrom, daughter-in-law Natalie Backstrom, grandchildren: Savia London, Kaelani and Kianu Schwerdtfeger, Taejah and Rajahn Dash, step-grandchildren Miia and Aki Backstrom, sisters: Patricia Ford and Mary Ellen Grant, best friend and ‘Heart Sister’ Gertrude Kaiser, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her brothers Tom and John Staiger. Her funeral procession will form on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia, thence to the St. Francis de Sales Church where at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort POB 67 Shandaken. Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E. B.
