Darlene I. Cafaldo ESOPUS- Darlene I. Cafaldo, 58, of Main St., Esopus, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 9, 2014 surrounded by her family and under the wonderful care of the staff of the Oncology Unit of Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Darlene was born in Kingston, on Feb. 1, 1956, the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Marlene M. (Kelder) Crantz. A graduate of Kingston High School class of ‘72, she married the love of her life, Michael J. Cafaldo, Sr. on June 28, 1975. She was employed as a licensed insurance agent and worked for various brokers in the Port Ewen/Esopus area for over ten years. Darlene was also a licensed nail technician for various salons in the Kingston area. A longtime resident of Esopus and parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, she was very active in her community where she served as District Secretary of the Esopus Fire District and was a social member of the Esopus Fire Department. She loved to travel on cruise ships, especially to her favorite port of call: Bermuda. She was also an accomplished line dancer with the Double D Productions. Darlene’s battle with ovarian cancer was a very tough journey, however inspiration from her dear friend, the late Marilyn Glenn, strengthened her will to overcome and fight hard. Her concern and care for others during this difficult battle was evident as she encouraged her husband of 39 years, Michael Cafaldo, Sr., to continue on his campaign for Esopus Highway Superintendent during her illness, and that her family continue to serve as active members of Esopus Fire Dept. and EMS. In addition to her husband, Darlene is survived by her three sons, Michael J. Cafaldo, Jr. and his wife Sandra, Bryan M. Cafaldo and his wife Shelley, and Andrew N. Cafaldo and his fiancé Kirstie Sanford, and four grandchildren who she adored: Kayla, Mason, Kyle, and Connor, all of Esopus. She was the loving daughter-in-law of Peter Cafaldo, Sr. of Glasco, and the niece of Gerard and Kathleen Kelder of Kingston. She also leaves behind her precious boy, canine “Parker”. Arrangements are under the care of Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park. The funeral procession will form 9 a.m. Thursday from funeral home, thence to Sacred Heart Church in Esopus, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Rev. Thomas Travers officiating. Cremation at Wiltwyck Crematory will follow.
