Derek was born in Kingston, N.Y. on Dec. 31, 1994 the son of Les and Ingrid (Deegan) Wood.
A Senior at Kingston High School (Class of 2013) and Ulster BOCES in Port Ewen, Derek was employed by Mother Earth Food Store. An overall sports enthusiast, he loved skateboarding, BMX, and cliff jumping. An avid and passionate Rugby Player, Derek played for the Kingston Mad Dogs. Derek loved football and played on The Raiders for the Pop Warner Football League. As a member of the Port Ewen Athletic Association, Derek played on the basketball and baseball leagues. He was a dedicated N.Y. Yankees, Carolina Panthers and UFC fan. His favorite foods were Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Chicken Nuggets with BBQ sauce.
Derek was an outgoing, inspiring young man. He enjoyed living life to the fullest. A dedicated and loyal friend, he leaves behind many friends and family who will deeply miss him and cherish the opportunity and privilege to know such an exceptional young man. His mantra was "GMG".
Derek will be so deeply missed by his mom, dad, sister Caroline and his dog Sam. He was a loving son and Big Brother. Derek enjoyed spending time with his family, going on vacations with them, watching sports with his dad, going to the Rail Trail with his mom and sister, spending Birthdays and Holidays together.
Words can not describe how much Derek was loved and will be missed.
Derek is survived by his sister, Caroline Wood of Ulster Park, and was the grandson of paternal grandparents, Frank and Susan Fabbie of Top Sail, N.C., and the late John Wood, and maternal grandparents, Pop Pop John Deegan and the late Caroline Deegan of Rifton. He was the great-grandson of Edith "Babs" Wood of Port Ewen, and the late John Wood, and Alice Lyda of Michigan and the late Jack Lyda. Uncles Erik Deegan, John Wood III, and Jason Fabbie, and Aunt Sarah Fabbie. Many cousins, great- aunts, uncles, and a close family friend Bob Haines of Kingston also survive.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park.
The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Town of Esopus United Methodist Church, 151 W. Main St., Port Ewen. Interment will follow at Wiltwyck Rural Cemetery. Derek's family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
