Edward Martin Obituary
Edward James Martin SAUGERTIES - Edward James Martin died Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Kingston Hospital, he was 81 years old. Born Sept. 13, 1931 in Camden, Ala., he was the son of Edward Watts and Mary Francis Martin. In 2000 he retired from J.W. Dodd Middle School in Freeport, N.Y. after 40 years as an Industrial Arts /Technology teacher. A 1953 graduate of Tuskegee University, he was very active in their Alumni Association Queens chapter where he was Treasurer. He served in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper from 1953 to 1958 and left active service as a 1st Lieutenant. Mr. Martin was an accomplished sculptor whose work was renowned and in many collections. He enjoyed gourmet cooking for family and friends. Skilled at nurturing plants and flowers he was known for finding things he liked to do and then doing them very well. In addition to his wife Dr. Alma Norment, he is survived by daughters, Sinette Martin of Queens, N.Y. and Lorna DeShay of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren Sadik Gaskin, Salaam Gaskin, Ariana DeShay and Carl DeShay Jr.; step children Vincent Norment, Carolyn Norment Ransom, Juliane Norment Hunter and son-in-law Marvin Hunter, step grandchildren Athena, Jonathan, Vincent, Kiana, Jasmine, Janelle, and Jada; brothers-in-law, Jesse and John Jones. Inurnment with full military honors will take place a Gerald Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.
