John F. Deegan ULSTER PARK- John F. (Pop Pop) Deegan, 62, of Old Post Rd., Ulster Park, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Mary’s Ave Campus, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Brooklyn, a son of the late John P. and Lucille (Caramanica) Deegan. John was employed as a water treatment plant operator for NYS Division for Youth, and was previously employed at Astor Home for Children for over ten years, and as maintenance staff for Marine Midland Bank. He was an avid fan of the NY Mets, and the NY Islanders. He also enjoyed music concerts and attending Mountain Jam. John is survived by one son, Erik J. (Nancy) Deegan of Napanoch; one daughter, Ingrid (Les) Wood of Ulster Park; one sister, Michelle (Michael) Melnick of Niskayuna, N.Y.; two brothers, Michael (Vicky) Deegan and Frank (Lisa) Deegan, all of Queens; and four grandchildren who he absolutely cherished: Caroline Wood, Connie Deegan, and Kristopher and David Naccarato. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He is predeceased by his wife Caroline (Lyda) Deegan, who died Jan. 14, 1996, and grandson, Derek J. Wood, who died March 28, 2013. Arrangements are under the care of Harry Van Vliet of Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park. A service will be begin 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, Rev. John Senkewich, celebrant. John’s family will receive friends prior to the service from 4 to 7 p.m. Cremation was held at Wiltwyck Crematory. It was John’s wishes to be buried at Wiltwyck Cemetery next to his grandson, Derek, which will be held privately.
