Joseph Santagata, Jr ELIZAVILLE, N.Y. - Joseph Santagata, Jr, 78, a longtime Elizaville, N.Y. resident and a part time Cape Coral, Fla. resident, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 30th, 2013 at the Orange County Regional Medical Center in Middletown, N.Y. Born on Dec. 5th, 1934, in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph and Kathleen (McGuire) Santagata. Joseph married Lucille Barsotti on Jan. 29, 1956 in Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Church, Queens, N.Y. and she survives at home in Elizaville. For over 35 years Joseph was a N.Y.C .Police officer, having attained the rank of Lieutenant. He also served in the U.S. Army National Guard for over 30 years and was a member of the Red Hook - Rhinebeck Lodge 2022 BPOE in Red Hook. Joe was an avid sports fan and his favorite team was the N.Y. Yankees. For many years he played softball, most recently in the “Over 50” softball league in Cape Coral, Fla. After he finished playing he continued to be involved as the commissioner of the league. A daily love of his was watching “Jeopardy” and competing against his “adopted son” –Theodosius and his lovely wife Maggie. A devoted and loving husband, father, uncle and friend, Joseph was a man formed from our greatest generation. In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, he is survived by his two sons, Joseph Santagata, III of Maui, Hawaii, and Michael Santagata of Phillipsburg, N.J., his daughter; Laurie Santagata of Fair Lawn, N.J., his sister; Joan Santagata of Los Angeles, Calif., his nephew and Godson; Anthony Santagata of Astoria, N.Y., and his nieces; Debra Roberts of Dover, Del., Danielle Kramer of Los Angeles, Calif., and Marisa Bailey of Los Angeles, Calif. He was predeceased by his brother; Dominick Santagata A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 5th, 2013 at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook, N.Y. Burial will be at Elizaville Methodist Cemetery, Elizaville.
