LAKE KATRINE- Margaret H. Massi, of One Commons Drive, formerly of Kingston, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2013 at Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home. She was 86.
Margaret was born in the Bronx, the oldest of four children, a daughter of the late Frank and Frances (Zimmermann) Droste. In 1931 her family returned with her and her eldest brother George to Germany where she lived until 1947. In Germany she received her technical education as a Kindergarten teacher. Upon her return to New York City she found employment as a governess and saved her earnings to provide passage for her family, which now included her younger brother Ralph and sister Ingrid, from Germany to NYC.
Margaret met the love of her life the late Nicholas A. Massi who she married in 1950 and settled back in the Bronx. They had two children Linda and Michael in 1951 and 1952. She returned to work in the 1960's as a jewelry clerk in a local store and at Korvette's in Pelham Manor. In 1978 Nicholas and Margaret moved to Kingston where her daughter and beloved grandson Robert joined them in 1979. Margaret's life revolved around her family and love of children. A joy to her was being able to help take care of her niece's and nephew's newborn children. In the 1980's she also worked as a baby-sitter for the YMCA of Kingston. Adding to her strength was the birth of her great granddaughter Leah Maizie Jane in 2011 who she adored.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Schneider, her son Michael Massi, her grandson Robert Schneider and his wife Heather and their daughter Leah, her brother George Droste and his wife Frances, her brother Ralph Droste and his wife Jeanne, her sister Ingrid Schaffer and her husband Frank, and her sister in law Grace Artese, as well as 23 nieces and nephews along with their spouses and children.
In addition to her parents and husband she is predeceased by her parents-in-law, Michael and Caroline (Giordano) Massi, her sister-in-law Clara Ferrato and her husband John, her sister-in-law Geraldine Brenna and her husband Nicholas, her brother-in- law Bartholomew Massi and his wife Louise and Grace's husband Phil.
