Obituary Condolences

Maria Weston Chapman RHINEBECK- Maria Weston Chapman, 76, died at Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, on Nov. 25, 2013. Although an invalid for most of her life, she never lost the spark of pleasure in the arts, music, laughter and people that had brightened her youth. Born in Boston on March 26, 1937, she was the daughter of Chanler Armstrong Chapman and Olivia James Chapman. Her paternal grandparents were the eminent writer John Jay Chapman and Elizabeth (Chanler) Chapman of Barrytown, N.Y.; her mother was a great-niece of the writers William and Henry James and a sister-in-law of the sculptor Alexander Calder. Ms. Chapman’s forbears included the Astor’s, Livingston’s, Beekman’s and Jays of the Hudson Valley. Preceding her in death were her brothers, John Jay Chapman II, Robert R. Chapman and Victor W. Chapman; her infant sister, Elizabeth W. Chapman; and her nephew, David Chapman. She is survived by her nieces, Raquel, Lee and Amy Chapman; nephew, Seth Chapman; sister-in-law, Isabel Chapman; and longtime friend, Doris Soroko. There will be a memorial service at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Barrytown, at 10 a.m on Dec. 9, 2013, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
