Richard Kniss Obituary

Richard L. Kniss SAUGERTIES- Richard L. Kniss, 74, known as Dick, of High Woods, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012 at Benedictine Hospital. Born April 24, 1937 in Portland, Ore., he was the son of the late John and Bernice Cutler Kniss. He is survived by his wife, Diane, and their sons, Jonathan and Peter, along with their wives, Tara and Kelli, and their children Alexa, 2, Jonah, 5, and Kathryn, 8 months. In addition, he is survived by his son, Richard Manders, wife Korinne, and children Sara, Jenna, Patrick and Madeleine. Survivors also include sisters Carol Smith, and her husband George, and Karen Stensrud, and her husband Chuck, her daughter Christy Stocker, and his brother, Lewis Johnson. He is also survived by mother-in-law, Elizabeth Kilbert, brothers-in-law Michael Kilbert, and his wife, Enid, and their daughters Alicia Leva and Staci Beauchamp, their husbands and children, and Danny Kilbert, and his wife Kim, and their daughters, Rachel and Cameron. In addition, he is survived by a close-knit group of long-time local friends, along with friends, fans and admirers from around the world. Dick was a caring and fun loving husband, father and grandfather. Later in life, he loved the time spent playing and interacting with his grandchildren. He liked playing golf, baseball and tennis and was a former Little League coach with the Mt. Marion Tigers. He loved movies, watching the news and weather, science fiction, reading sports biographies and fishing. For many years, Dick was a fixture at Zena Recreation Park, where the family spent their summers. A truly accomplished upright bassist, Dick was the 4th member of Peter, Paul & Mary's trio for nearly 50 years. During the 1970's, Dick was an original member of John Denver's band, where he co-wrote the smash hit, "Sunshine on My Shoulders." Working with PP&M and Denver, Dick performed for millions around the world sharing their music, including "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Puff the Magic Dragon," "Blowing in the Wind" and many other favorites. He also performed hundreds of times to benefit causes ranging from local Mount Marion Elementary school to marching with Martin Luther King, Jr. for civil rights issues and many other humanitarian causes. A jazz lover, Dick also performed with many legends of that genre, including Herbie Hancock and Woody Herman. The family will be holding a service Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties. The family has requested that donations be made in Dick's name to Hospice of Dutchess & Ulster Counties, which provided exceptional care to him in his final months. The last time I saw Richard was at The Barns where he played with Noel Paul Stookey. At one point, Noel said, "somebody's out of tune", to which Richard replied, "it's not me". The crowd went wild. Later that week Noel emailed me to ask if I had taken any pictures of the two on stage. Sorry to this day that I didn't. PP&M wouldn't have been the same without Dick Kniss.

Dick was my roommate in NYC in the 60's. Fond memories of him.

My very first concert, John Denver in Boston, was when I was seventeen in 1974. Denver introduced his band at one point, and I remembered the bass player's name because I'd picked out a certain, undefinable "something" he'd added to the previous numbers. It wasn't until some time later that I learned of his association with Peter, Paul, and Mary, although I owned some of their albums. I didn't know he'd passed until doing some research for a fictional story loosely based on that earlier part of my life. What a loss. My thoughts go out to his friends and family, even at this late date.

Dick, if you can read this, when PP&M and yourself left the stage singly, I was the one that crudely gave you a loud whistle. Maybe others did too; I was too far gone in your perfect music to notice. When the four of you weren't recording music I was having withdrawal symptoms......still am; I don't know how long my recorded songs will keep me going. May you be able to continue your music in "The Front Office". M. O. Bluffton, IN

I met him in 1979 at the P,P&M show. I was a quite naive seventeen year old. Dick conversed with me for a while about life and fame, and how to keep ones balance. A beautiful human being, with the countenance of an angel.

To Diane. I am tearful as I just found out Dick had passed nearly two years ago now. I was always amazed when I received a Christmas card from you two! I never expected anything return! I will never forget the first time I met John, Dick and Steve after my first concert experience at the Swing Auditorium in beautiful San Bernardino, CA! I last communicated with Dick a few years ago by mail. He had told me he would be performing with PP&M in Escondido, CA that fall. I was planning to attend but Mary became ill and the concert was cancelled. She passed not long after that. The world has lost a wonderful, kind hearted man and an amazingly talented musician. I will never forget his kindness or yours Diane. I will miss him as I miss John. The music lives on! It makes me sad to listen sometimes. John's music got me through my really tough teen years. Dick and the other musicians were all a part of
my life too. I realized the other day John would be 70 this year. The world's loss is heaven's gain. Can't wait to see them there. May mercy, peace and
love be multiplied to you. God bless. My deepest sympathy.

Was thinking about Dick yesterday and sending good thoughts, then today saw his obituary....10 months later. Hurts so bad to know he's gone. He used to write me when I was a teen; his friendship made me feel special when I was growing up. I needed that. Such a good hearted, sweet man. Thanks to his family for sharing him with the world. I was blessed to know Dick for 37 yrs thru my work and friendship with Noel. And When he came to the henhouse to play on the first album of ours that Noel produced,he and I finally had down time to really talk as opposed to backstage pre/after show backstage chats. He was such a good hearted man,a humble man,who ,thru working with a lot of others than PPM stories that he shared with me, I really learned how dedicated to doing his part in the music regardlless of personality conflicts. That takes a special man. And that he was.... I will miss his playing, but also the soft ,open look in his eyes.. lynn mossburg

Sadly, the Trio is now two voices removed, but we are tasked with their mission to carry on. Dick and Mary, your musical children ebrace what you have started and steward unto future generations your love and artistry. You will be missed, but hardly forgotten....We have only begun to rekindle the message and support Noel and Peter in their ministry of caring and common oneness we must all share together.

January 29, 2012

In the early 70s, Peter Paul & Mary were booked to play a night concert at the Music Circus in Lambertville, NJ. There was a restaurant called the Weiner King in Flemington, several miles north. I worked there then. Everyone in Hunterdon County knew who was coming to town, I'm sure, because the band was quite popular back then. Early that evening, a small entourage came into the restaurant and my boss, Jack, walked up to the front counter and asked, "Are you Peter, Paul & Mary?"

"No," came the reply, "I'm Paul."

I still tell that story and people always laugh. I hope it serves as a reminder of such a talented group of musicians. That includes you, Mr. Kniss. We will never forget you. Thank you for all you did for the world of music. Heaven is a better place as you stand alongside Mary and John Denver. God Bless You.

Though we never met, the Man was one of my musical heroes. I first heard him on record at Christmas, 1963, and switched from violin to upright bass within a few months. I literally learned to play listening to him and trying to imitate his countermelodies.

My sense of Mr. Kniss is that he was a truely Gentle man, as evidenced in his always-tasteful work. He will be missed greatly.
