Robert Lee Edge Obituary
PORT EWEN- Robert Lee Edge, 94, of East Stout Ave., Port Ewen, formerly of Town of Ulster, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 26, 2013 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Broadway Campus, Kingston, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 30, 1919, a son of the late Horace Lee and Nellie (Cooper) Edge. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member of Joyce Shirick VFW Post 1386 and American Legion Post 150. A plankowner, a crew member of a U.S. Navy ship when that ship was placed in commission, he was a lifetime member of The National Association of Destroyer Veterans, aka “Tin Can Sailors”. He was also active in ship crew reunions for the USS Hudson DD475 Association. A member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, he was employed in computer manufacturing at IBM, first in Poughkeepsie, then in Kingston, retiring after 30 years at age 65. A past member of the Sawkill Fire Dept, he was an avid golfer and senior Olympics participant who enjoyed his daily visits to the YMCA. He loved hunting and fishing, including deep sea, trout and ice fishing. Robert was also an avid reader and gardener of flowers. Most of all, he was well-known as a “Jack of all trades” who was always there for his friends and neighbors alike. His loving wife of 61-1/2 years, Marcella “Sally” (Corkery) Edge, died on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2008. Robert loved traveling with his wife visiting areas which incl.: Montana, Spain, Ireland, Hawaii, Portugal, Bermuda, Maine, and many winters in Fla. He is survived by one daughter, Judith M. West and her husband Todd of Port Ewen; one son, Thomas Lee and his wife Diane of Big Fork, Montana; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lee Famiglietti and her husband Paul of Kingston, and Sarah E. West of Port Ewen; and one great-grandson, Enzo Lee Famiglietti. Many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also predeceased by siblings: Chester and Andrew Edge, Beatrice Manookian, Alice Hendricks, Louise Wells, Evelyn Peterson, and Doris Josefski. The funeral will be held 10 a.m., Saturday at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Harry VanVliet IV, certified Celebrant, will officiate. Interment with military honors by Joyce-Shirick VFW Post 1386 Honor Guard will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston. Robert’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O.
