Ruth Lindsay Obituary

Ruth Lindsay WOODLAND VALLEY- Ruth Lindsay, a long time area resident died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at the Kingston Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 8, 1924 in Keansburg, N.J. daughter of the late Ralph and Bessie Williams. She's a graduate of the Jersey city Hospital School of Nursing, and had been a registered nurse at the Jersey City Medical Center. Ruth had been summering in the Catskill's as a child in a home her grandfather built in 1906, before becoming a full time resident four decades ago. She held various jobs which included: the Scandinavian Ski Shoppe in Mt. Tremper in the early '70's, a rural Daily Freeman delivery route, and a clerk at the Boiceville Wine & Liquors. She was a unique and caring individual who served as grandmother to many Woodland Valley children. She valued her independence, and loved animals, especially pugs. She had a green thumb evidenced by her flower gardens, enjoyed cooking and baking and made an unforgettable strawberry-rhubarb pie. Ruth was an avid reader, and a good friend to her neighbors. Family and friends will honor and remember Ruth's life by gathering at a later time. Memorial contributions may be made to the M.F. Whitney Hose Fire Co. or the Phoenicia Library. Expressions of condolence may be shared at Ruth's memorial page at www.gormleyfunera lhome.com

Ruth was a neighbor, friend, and a full blown character whose spirit I hope I can emulate as I add on the years.....I will never forget her! And, I am honored to have some of her daffodils planted in my garden...........................

Ruth was such a delight to talk to. She always had an opinion on a topic, and certainly learned and shared a lot about wines. My husband and I loved talking to her and when he passed away she was heartbroken. Ruth kept the people she loved so close to her heart. She was so independent, she has become a model for me in my older years. My best to her family and friends.

Ruth was one of the first people I met when I bought my home in Woodland Valley in 1981. She had been coming up here from New Jersey since she was 12 years old. Most people would remember her from the Boiceville liquor store, where she worked into her later years and became a connoisseur of wines. I always enjoyed finding a bottle of wine in my mailbox on my birthday. My children grew up with Ruth as a part of their lives, and she enjoyed caring for my cat Willow last winter for many weeks. We missed her presence this last Christmas morning. I have so many memories of Ruth over the last 30 years.
