Barbara Roberts RED HOOK - Barbara Roberts, a resident of Red Hook for the past 55 years, passed away surrounded by her family at home on Saturday, July 5th, 2014. Born June 7, 1926 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, she was the only child of Daniel Morgan Smith and Ada Leoma (King) Smith. Over her 88 years, she held many jobs. As a teen, she was a cub reporter for The Point Pleasant Register and during World War II, she had a brief stint as a welder. From the late 1960’s through the 1970’s, she worked at Apple Valley Realty as a real estate agent. Barbara Roberts was instrumental in the creation of the Red Hook Rec Park. One of the founders of the Red Hook Thrift Shop, she also orchestrated numerous additional fundraisers for the project. Growing up in Point Pleasant, Barbara was very involved in her church choir. This led to her competing and winning the Miss “Snow White West Virginia” radio singing contest. Her performance resulted in a scholarship offer from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Barbara married John M. Roberts, Sr. on Sept. 4, 1944 in Huntington, W.Va. They shared 59 years of marriage until his death on Oct. 3, 2003. She is survived by her loving family, including her sons & daughters-in-law: John M .Jr. & Karen Roberts, of Red Hook, Daniel M. & Mary Roberts of Naperville, Ill., M. Theodore & Elise Roberts of Kingston, and Arthur B. & Shelli Roberts of Red Hook, her daughters; Rebecca Roberts Pauley of Rexford, N.Y., and Barbara & Matt Kurdziel of Salt Point, ten grandchildren, and six great- grandchildren. Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes in Red Hook on Monday, July 7th, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. & 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8th, 2014 at Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Red Hook, N.Y. Interment will be at St. John’s Reformed Church Cemetery, Red Hook immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the St. Johns Food Pantry, 126 Old Post Road North, Red Hook, N.Y. 12571 or to the Animal Protective Foundation 53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, N.Y 12302.
