LeRoy L. ‘Roy' Winchell Phoenicia- Decorated World War II veteran and past Fire Chief of the M.F. Whitney Hose Company, Roy Winchell, age 93, passed away peacefully on July 3rd at the Kingston Hospital. He was born in Kingston June 6, 1920 to the late Melvin and Harriet Kain Winchell. He was a resident of Phoenicia for 78 years. He is survived by his loving children, LeRoy (Jodi) of Norwalk, Calif.; Leatrice, Wanda Gale (Wyatt), and Phil of Phoenicia; Sheila Jansen (Harry) of High Falls and Ruth of Kingston as well as beloved grandchildren; Dawn Winchell of Lebanon, N.H.; Patrick Winchell of Norwalk, Calif.; Tammy Winchell of Perris, Calif.; Christopher Gale of Danbury, Conn.; Trevor & Kyle Gale of Phoenicia; Caleb of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jessie Cramer of High Falls. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Ella (Woolheater) Winchell in 1998 after 52 years of marriage; an infant daughter, Patricia in 1950; as well as three brothers; Robert, Walter and Melvin. His family is very proud of his service to his country during World War II. He was attached to the 1st, 5th and 7th armies. He saw action in North Africa, invasion of Sicily, battle of Casino, drive on Rome, invasion of southern France, Battle of the Bulge, Rhine River crossing and finished his service on the Elbe River, 30 miles from Berlin. He received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, Oak Leaf Cluster, the French Croix De Guerre and six battle stars. He belonged to the V.F.W. Shandaken Memorial Post 2837 and was a 73 year member of the M.F. Whitney Hose Company. He retired in 1985 from the Ulster County Highway Department as a foreman after 22 ½ years of service. He was a past member of the Phoenicia Water Board and a founding member of the Shandaken Recreation Commission. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family request memorial contributions to the Shandaken Ambulance Squad, P.O.B. 91, Phoenicia 12464 or the M.F. Whitney Hose Company, P.O.B. 281, Phoenicia 12464. Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia.
