Opitz, Helen (Drag)
Helen (Drag) Opitz Schenectady Helen (Drag) Opitz, in her 100th year, entered into eternal life on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Glendale Home, following a brief illness. Born on September 11, 1914 in Waterford, NY, Helen was the last surviving of eight children born to George and Bertha (Wnek) Drag. She was raised on the family farm in Waterford and, as a young woman, was employed by Cluett, Peabody and Company in Troy. Helen was married to John M. Opitz Sr. on September 6, 1936 at St. Michael's Church in Cohoes. She later moved to Schenectady where she raised her family and worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Opitz Transmission, which was founded by her husband in 1945. She retired in 1970. Helen and John enjoyed more than 65 years of marriage prior to his unexpected death on January 15, 2002. In her retirement years, Helen enjoyed spending each winter in Florida. She always enjoyed the opportunity to entertain her family and friends. Whether it was at home in Schenectady, at the family camp in Grafton, NY, or at her winter home in Florida, Helen's doors were always open to anyone who stopped in and a seat was made available at her table. Helen was a great cook and spent many hours preparing specially made and delicious meals for her family and friends. She was lovingly known as the Pierogi Lady for her talent in preparing pierogis as well as other Polish specialties. A devout Roman Catholic, Helen's early Christian values were formed at St. Michael's Church in Cohoes, where she received her early sacraments, was married, and where her family was one of its earliest communicants. She later was a communicant of parishes in both Schenectady and in Florida. Helen's family wishes to offer a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Glendale Home for their great care and concern, to Ingersoll Place, where she recently resided and to the Community Hospice team. Helen was the loving mother of Virginia (Joseph) Zalucki, John (Antoinette) Opitz Jr. and Bertha (William) Miller; cherished grandmother (Babci) of nine grandchildren, Dr. James (Michelle) Zalucki, Robert (Kristi) Zalucki, Richard Zalucki, Sandra (Mark) Dardanelli, Justin Opitz, Jessica (Gary) Kratt, Steven (Rachelle) Miller, Jeffrey Miller and John Miller; adoring great-grandmother of 11 great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Nicholas and Alina Zalucki, Emily, Abby and Samantha Zalucki, Mitchell and Mia Dardanelli, Amaya Kratt, Casey and Brandon Miller; dear sister of the late John, Alex, Walter, Frank and Stanley Drag, Mary Dziark and Dorothy Mertens. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Helen's funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road in Latham and at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, Cohoes, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Peter Tkocz, Pastor. Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Waterford. Friends are invited and may visit with Helen's family on Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. To those wishing to remember Helen in a special way, contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church, 20 Page Avenue, Cohoes, NY 12047, the Community Hospice of Schenectady, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 or to a favorite charity of your choice.
