Donald J. Johnson MiddleburghDonald L. Johnson, 87, formerly of Middleburgh, died peacefully with his family surrounding him on Monday, March 31, 2014 in Wyoming, DE. Born March 21, 1927 in Oceanside, he was the son of Frederick and Gladys Johnson, Sr. Donald was raised on Long Island and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and proudly served his country until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He retired from the Town of Hempstead where he was a truck driver for many years. Upon moving to Middleburgh, he became a member of the American Legion Post 248 and VFW Post 2161, as well as serving with the Huntersland Volunteer Fire Department. He treasured the time spent with family and his faithful dog, Molly. Survivors include two nieces, Lorraine Brown of Sharon Springs and Therese Nechay of Wyoming, DE; and three nephews, Joseph Johnson of New Milford, NJ, James Johnson of Ocala, FL, and Steve Johnson of Wyoming, DE. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2014 at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh. A period of visitation will be held prior to the service at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will be follow with military honors at Middleburgh Cemetery.
