Harold R. Oppelt

Harold R. Oppelt Charleston Four Corners Harold R. Oppelt, 88, of East Lykers Rd., Charleston Four Corners, died Friday, August 30th at Otsego Manor where he had resided since October, 2011. Mr. Oppelt was born December 11, 1924 in Port Jervis, NY a son of Frank Oppelt and Laura (Clark) Oppelt-Newman. He attended Port Jervis High School and later, enlisted in the US Navy serving his country during WWII. Following his discharge, he enlisted in the US Army and continued serving his country during and after WWII in which he received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the war. Upon returning 'home' after his discharge, Harold worked for General Electric Co. in Schenectady, worked in construction through the union hall in Albany, worked in security for Secon Co. in Schenectady, and finally, retired from Price Chopper in Newburgh. Mr. Oppelt was a proud member of the DAV Chapter 88 in Rotterdam, the VFW Post 161 in Port Jervis and the former American Legion Post #1261 of Schoharie along with the Charleston Christian Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and teaching his children the beauty of nature. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl (DeLorme) Oppelt whom he married August 27, 1983; his children, Harold (Barb) Oppelt of Duanesburg, Dora Oppelt of Cobleskill, Cathy (Bill) Loftis of Carlisle, Joe (Denise) Oppelt Kopacz of Sloansville, Dorothy A. Oppelt of Schenectady, Tony (Debbie) Oppelt of Latham, Russ (Tracy) Oppelt of Fultonham, James (Kim) Oppelt of Guilderland, and Helen Greklek of Pennsylvania; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Storms; and a brother, Frank Oppelt both of Port Jervis; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, J. Thomas Oppelt, killed in action during WWII; and brothers, Richard C. Oppelt and Arthur G. Oppelt. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main Street, Schoharie where a period of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Charleston Christian Cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Otsego Manor for their loving and devoted care.
