Harris D. Wood

Major Harris D. Wood SchenectadyMajor Harris D. Wood, 84, died Tuesday morning, August 27th at his home in Schenectady. Born in Hudson, NY, Harris was the son of the late Daniel and Clara (Decker) Wood. An Army veteran, Major Wood served as a clergy with the Salvation Army from 1954 to 1979. After his retirement he served as the chaplin of the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in Schenectady, was an active bell ringer and a member of the Kiwanis Clubs wherever he was stationed. He also enjoyed reading, music, playing cards and his time with his family. Predeceased by a daughter, Christina Sutton, Major Wood is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eva C. (Woods) Wood; his children, William Wood (Rebecca) of Atlanta, GA, Todd Wood of Albany, Arlene Merrill of Burnt Hills, Shari Wood of Schenectady and Heather Wood (Kelly Smith) of Rotterdam; a son-in-law, Thomas Sutton of Virginia; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, August 30th at 10 a.m. at the Salvation Army Schenectady Corps, 222 Lafeyette Street, Schenectady, NY 12305. A visitation will be held at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Ave., Schenectady, NY on Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Park.
