Howard Oscar Coger CobleskillHoward Oscar Coger, 93, of McArthur Ave., Cobleskill, died Thursday, December 19th at his home after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Coger was born December 4, 1920 in East Worcester, NY, a son of Oscar and Bertha (Shaffer) Coger. He was educated in the East Worcester one-room school house and later, enlisted in the U.S. Army where he defended his country during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge, he then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he defended his country once again during WWII and participated in the invasion of France. For many years after returning to Schoharie County, Howard drove tractor-trailer for Ft. Edward Express, retiring in 1982. Always keeping busy, he then began his career as a handyman and self-employed carpenter until 2005, when at the age of 85, he decided to take it easy and once again retire from hard work. Mr. Coger was a proud member of the Teamsters local #338 in Yonkers, was one of only two surviving charter members of Cobleskill Eagles Aerie #2695, The American Legion Post and VFW Posts in Cobleskill, the East Worcester Fish & Game Club, Mohawk Valley Cat & Coon Club and the Summit Conservation Club. Howard was most proud of his service to his country, the love of his family, and the long and fruitful life given to him. Howard married Frieda (Wissenbach) Coger on August 16, 1941. She predeceased him on October 16, 2006. His survivors include his children, Fred (Sheila) Coger of Sharon Springs, Linda Coger of Mt. Dora, FL, Judy Cody of Leesburg, OH, Gail DiCicco of Jefferson, Howard O. Coger, Jr. of Cobleskill, Joanne B. (Tom) Brady of Mayfield and Beverly J. Romain of Cobleskill; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Moore of Cobleskill; and eight nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by a daughter, Anna Marie Coger, his parents, and his siblings, Ruth Cooper, Doris Baker, Clara Lappeus and Myrtle Elliott. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Monday, December 23rd at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel Street, Cobleskill where the Cobleskill Eagles Aerie #2695 will hold a service at 12 noon followed by a funeral service by the Rev. Sarah Litzner, Pastor of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cobleskill. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
