John DeSilva

John DeSilva RotterdamJohn DeSilva, 78, entered into the Arms of Our Lord on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. John was born in Lawrence, MA, the son of the late John and Josephine (LaSpina) DeSilva. He was a graduate of Searles High School in Methuen, MA, and Lowell State Teacher's College and earned his master's degree from SUNY at Potsdam. John served as an Army radio operator in Korea where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He taught music education in Schenectady City Schools from 1960 to 1989. He also served as the music director at the First Reformed Church of Scotia and was chorus master for various productions of the Schenectady Light Opera Company. For many years, he was a member of the Dave Jarvis Quartet. John was the beloved husband of Carol Petty DeSilva, whom he married in December of 1983; beloved father of JeriAnn (Jim) Vincent, Joanna DeSilva Clark, John P. DeSilva Jr., Diana McMaster, Gary (Lisa) McMaster, and David (Erica) McMaster; beloved brother of Barbara (Al) Traficante; beloved brother-in-law of Michael Petty, John (Sandy) Petty, Robert Petty; doting grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; John is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Friday, May 24 at the Open Arms Church, Rotterdam. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's name may be made to the Open Arms Church, 2714 Curry Rd., Schenectady, NY 12303.
