Robert C. Sumner

Robert Charles Sumner SchoharieRobert Charles Sumner of Schoharie, died on Christmas Day in his home. He had been ill for several months. Born in Schenectady, NY on November 13, 1922, he moved with his parents, Alanson and Lillian Sumner, to Mt. Vernon where he attended and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. After graduation, he entered the apprenticeship course at GE, and served in the United States Navy during WW II. In l946 he made his home in Schoharie with his wife, Helen (Honey) Vedder Sumner who predeceased him in August of 2003. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends on November 13, 2012. Bob was a manager in the HR department at GE until 1991 when he retired after 45 years. He was an Elder of the United Presbyterian Church, and a past master of the Schoharie Valley Masonic Lodge in 1957. His time was kept active through ongoing projects of Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association, taking part in the restoration of the Railroad Museum and the Lutheran Parsonage. He kept his family close by always, enjoyed camping and boating on Lake George, trips to the golf course and winters in Destin, Florida. In later years he was simply content with the company of his cat, family dinners and occasional gatherings with friends, especially Thursday lunches with his buddies at the diner. Survivors include his daughters, Ruth Anne Wilkinson and Joan Marciniak, both of Schoharie; their husbands, John Wilkinson, and Richard Marciniak; four grandchildren, Jody Keese, Dan Keese, Amanda Vogel and Jennifer Marciniak; five great-grandchildren, Joshua Kotlow, Grace Vogel, Josh Glick, Luke and Hope Morgenstein. A memorial service will be held at the United Presbyterian Church in the Village of Schoharie on January 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. Burial will be held privately in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association, PO Box 554, Schoharie, NY 12157 or to Scho-Wright Ambulance, PO Box 325, Schoharie, NY 12157.
