Edward J. Ahrens (Papa) EphratahEdward J. Ahrens, 79, of Ephratah, died peacefully Wednesday, February 15th, 2012 at his residence with his loving family. Born September 18, 1932 in Astoria, Long Island, to the late Edward and Helen Ahrens. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert (Carol) Ahrens; and is survived by two brothers, Frank (Shirley) Ahrens and Gary (Mandy) Ahrens. Ed was a beloved husband and father. He resided in Ephratah for many years and is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Mary Ann Duesler Ahrens; and nine children, Sharon Heroth of Meco, Patricia Young (John Dambrose) of Rensselaer, Elizabeth Ahrens of Tok, Alaska, Margaret Ahrens of Fort Plain, Theresa (Ed) Seeley of Ephratah, Sam (Todd) Rogers of Johnstown, Barbara Ahrens of Vero Beach, Florida, Donna (Frank) Nellis of Ephratah and Ed (Irene) Ahrens of Ephratah. Ed is also survived by his 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and alsoseveral nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Ed was a dedicated, hard working man, employed at Johnstown Knit, General Electric and Keymark. He retired from Hussman's in Gloversville as plant superintendent in 1991 after 20 years of service. Ed loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. In his later years, he enjoyed working on the farm and raising sheep. He looked forward to Sunday morning breakfasts with his family, sharing his sense of humor and his unique stories, which will never be forgotten. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 18th, 2012 at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February, 17th, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at the Ephratah Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Edward to the Ephratah Volunteer Fire Department, 4305 State Highway 10, St. Johnsville, NY 13452.
