BLAIR MCFARLANE Obituary

Blair A. McFarlane, Jr., a longtime resident of Glens Falls and Schroon Lake, New York, passed away unexpectedly on April 16, 2011 after a brief illness in Leesburg, Florida. McFarlane was born in Beloit, Wisconsin in 1923, and spent his youth in Syracuse, NY. After graduating from the Officers Candidate School at Colgate University, he served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet during World War II. He returned to graduate from Syracuse University in 1946. Soon after, he began his lifelong career with the Glens Falls Insurance Agency, eventually becoming branch manager of the Continental Insurance Company in Glens Falls, New York, retiring in April 1984. McFarlane was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast who ran track competitively until the age of 81. During his senior track career, McFarlane captured numerous local, state (New York and Florida) and national medals-including a 3rd place finish in the Penn Relays 75-and-over 100-meter race. As a sports fan, he enjoyed attending PGA tour events and offering ardent support to all of his alma mater's Orangemen teams. During his retirement, McFarlane returned to the seas, partaking in leisure cruises around the world. Closer to home, McFarlane volunteered at the Leesburg, Florida Hospice and worked with the Memorial Park staff at The Plantation retirement community. McFarlane was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Bain McFarlane, in 2006, and one brother, James R. McFarlane, in 2009. Blair is survived by two sons, Blair A. McFarlane III (Kim) of Saratoga, New York and Bruce A. McFarlane Sr. (Joyce) of Dale City, Virginia; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his friend, companion, and partner in golf, church activities and travel, Ms. Joyce Bollinger of Leesburg, Florida. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls, NY at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, followed by the committal service at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your local hospice service organization. Arrangements are under the direction of Regan and Denny Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Rd., Queensbury, NY. Online condolences can be made by visiting www.scottbarbieri.com.

Blair and Bruce,
Dottie Russ just e-mailed me about the passing of your father. I am so sorry for your loss. What a nice write-up about him. I never knew all that. We will always miss your parents and you two guys at Riverside. Come back anytime. You are always welcome.
My mother (now living with me) just reminded me of how we visited with your parents while attending a Syracuse University Alumni Banquet.
