Carolyn Atherton of Sugar Land, TX, formerly of Portland, ME and Schenectady, NY, died peacefully at home on October 19, 2011. Carolyn was born on January 21, 1926 in Unity, Maine to Lloyd and Alberta (Thompson) Tozier. After high school she worked for the phone company for a year before convincing her father that women should have the opportunity to the education of their choice for the benefit of society. Carolyn "Cal" then graduated from Farmington State Teachers College (FSTC) in 1948 with a degree in elementary education. During her years at Farmington, Cal was elected president of her class for two years. Cal was active in Phi Nu Omega sorority and president of the sorority her senior year. Cal married M. Manning Atherton in 1951. They shared a special bond for 41 years until his death in 1992. Mrs. Atherton taught the primary grades in Kittery and Bangor, ME, Brookline, MA, and Schenectady, NY, for a total of 21 years. From 1964 until she retired in 1981 she taught second grade at Zoller School in Schenectady, NY. Cal had a sharp memory for people and names. She could tell you names and information about students that she taught 50 years ago. She was always interested in hearing about the paths they chose to take in their lives. After retirement, she and her husband formed a catering company, Atherton Caterers in Schenectady, NY, and then in Portland, ME. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Schenectady, NY, and the Woodfords Corner Congregational Church in Portland, ME. Over the years she was the class agent for the FSTC class of '48. In 2000 Cal moved to Houston, TX to be near her daughter, Ann. In addition to her parents and her husband, Carolyn was predeceased by her sister, Charlotte (Tozier) Foster; and her brother, John Tozier. She is survived by her three children, Emma Jane Murphy of Londonderry, NH, Ann Atherton Poulin of Houston, TX, Mark Atherton of Cleveland, OH; and their spouses, Michael Poulin and Linda Atherton. She also leaves her brother, William Tozier and wife, Carolyn of Hallowell, Maine; grandchildren, Taylor Poulin, Katelyn Atherton, Libby Poulin, Blake Atherton, and Graham Atherton, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2012 in Unity, Maine.
