John D. Ryan RotterdamJohn D. Ryan, 82, of Rotterdam, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on April 19, 2013 at Ellis Hospital after a long illness. John was born on April 19, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY. to the late Ralph and Alice Ryan. John served our nation honorably in the United States Marine Corps and was a graduate of St. John's University. He worked for many years as a regional sales manager for the General Mills Corporation. After leaving General Mills he worked at the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. John was very active in the community, volunteering his time with numerous groups. He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Rotterdam Elks, held the positions of commander and treasurer in the Lt. Vibert O. Fryer Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, was a member of the Electric City Detachment of the Marine Corps League and at one time held the position of commandant. John also previously held the position of president of the Rotterdam Babe Ruth league. John was very proud of his service in the Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of sergeant and continued to support veterans' charities throughout his life. John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret, his son, Dr. James J. Ryan M.D., sisters, Alice Canfield and Joan Fitzgerald and his brother, Ralph Ryan. He is survived by five children, John D. (Carol) Ryan Jr., Thomas W. Ryan, Margaret M. (Jack) Anderton, Edward M. Ryan, and Daniel P. (Patty) Ryan. John is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Jane Jordan; his sisters, Patricia (Tom) Scott, Peggy Bloecker; and his sister-in-law, Edith Ryan; as well as 12 grandchildren, Ambree Ryan, Michelle Tyson, Michael Ryan, Melody Ryan, Trevor Ryan, Kerry Ryan, Catherine Anderton, John Anderton, Providence Ryan, Edward Ryan Jr., Timothy Ryan, Nicole Ryan; and seven great-grandchildren, Emmilie Oudekirk, Kaitlynn Oudekirk, Travis Oudekirk, Ryan Garrow, Tyler Tyson, Matthew Tyson, and Julia Tyson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 3034 Ford Ave., Rotterdam, NY on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 9 a.m. Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at the Demarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam, NY. Burial with military honors will be held at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to , 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105
