Leonard N. Berdan DVM Obituary
Leonard N. Berdan, DVM, 100, longtime Schoharie resident, WWII veteran and Veterinarian, died Tuesday, May 15th at the Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.Len was born in Wayne, NJ on August 4, 1917 to Bird and Clara (Nellis) Berdan. One of eight children, Leonard and his siblings, successfully kept their family going through the Great Depression. He graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1936. Following pre-medical studies at St. Lawrence University, Dr. Berdan graduated from Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1943 and served in WWII in the Veterinary Corps then as an infantry Captain Regimental Intelligence Staff Officer, 27th Infantry, of the 25th Division in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, and then in occupied Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946.Upon his return from Japan, Dr. Berdan began his veterinary practice in Middleburgh, NY and in 1947, married Margaret "Peg" Ellen Bliss of Middleburgh. They later moved to Schoharie, NY where "Doc" Berdan conducted a general veterinary practice from 1949 to 1982. In the 70's, he also worked as an assistant director of the Division of Animal Industry for the NYS Dep't of Agriculture. Doc was active in veterinary societies, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, the Schoharie School Board, and was a member of the Schoharie Reformed Church. He was an active golfer, boater, skier, camper, and watercolorist; he enjoyed traveling with his wife Peg, who predeceased him in 1996.Doc is survived by his three sons, Walter G. of Middleburgh, Leonard G. (Meg) of Schoharie and William S. (Carey Anne) of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren, Garrett, Rebecca, Kayla, Katherine, and Gavin; great-grandchildren, Marion and Zelie along with many loving nieces and nephews and his close friend, Emily Henry.A period of visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie on Monday, May 21st. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd at the Schoharie Reformed Church, Main St., Schoharie.
