Nancy Ellen Pipito, 66, entered into eternal life on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Born in Albany on February 3, 1943, she was the daughter of Dorothy Ghetti Pipito and the late Armand Pipito. Raised in Elsmere, Nancy was a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School. Her passion for art led her to the University at New Paltz where she received her bachelor's degree. Nancy taught art in the Arlington School District in Poughkeepsie before moving to Boston, where she taught in the Watertown School District and served as head of their art department for 13 years before retiring. During that time, she completed her master's degree. While teaching in Boston, Nancy was elected to the prestigious Copley Art Society. Nancy loved to travel. She studied art in Rome for one year and made several trips to Italy and Sicily, going back to the villages of her ancestors and forging relationships with newfound family. She loved visiting museums and was known for her zest for life. Nancy was an active member of the Red Hat Society in the Boston area. She was devoted to her mother and family who will miss her dearly. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brother, Dr. Salvatore L. Pipito (Gail); a niece, Laura A. Rossi (Louis); and nephew, Christopher A. Pipito; her aunt, Joan Pipito (the late Dr. Fiore Pipito); cousins, Rosalie Riccio (Michael), Nancy Catena (Gene), Joseph Aulisi (Marcia), Marie Papandrea (Dr. Anthony Papandrea), Norma Boyer, Steven Melita (Sally) and Lenora Molitor and their families; and dear friend, Michael McDermott. I recently learned that Nancy had passed away. We were good friends at New Paltz. Although we lost touch after graduation she was always in my thoughts as a good friend and remarkable person. In 2005 we reconnected and it was as if no time had gone by.

Please accept my sincere condolences from a member of the Class of 65.

Sharing this with you all...Ms. Pipito was my favorite teacher. She helped me through one of the most difficult times in my life (not just through art but with genuine caring and affection). Found this news way too late...heavy on my heart. Regards to her family. Her passing was much too soon.

A small tribute to her, via my blog, littledrawn.com

thank you N.E.P.

Forty is the new thirty, or twenty, depending on who's quoting. People love to say this to those that have just turned forty. I've especially noticed that people younger than forty tend to mention it the most (in other words, "Ha, ha...you're forty and I'm not!"). This number has pretty much taken over my thought process for the whole month of January. I didn't expect it to effect me quite as much as it has.

Yesterday I found out that my favorite art teacher from high school had died back in October. Age 66, much too young. She used to say "draw every day" (among other things), but this phrase has stuck with me all of these years. The summer before my senior year in high school she started working with me to get my portfolio organized for submission to RISD, Mass Art, SMFA. Very exciting!

All of this preparation came to an abrupt and unfortunate end on September first of that year. My father died five days before the start of school and I was forced to choose a "safer" and more affordable major to study in college in the months following. Turns out her class was immensely helpful as I navigated my way through a very emotionally tough and complicated senior year of high school. Every day, first period, you'd find me in the art room. It added a little joy to my life then...I hope that she knew, I think that she did.

I'm shocked to say that it's been 22 years since I drew every day. Another goal to add to my "to do" list of age forty. When I do get there, I'll think of her. Hopefully, I'll share it with you too...

Dear family and friends of Ms. Pipito,
I am so saddened by the news of her passing. She was my art teacher in elementary school and through high school, I can't say enough about her teaching, so full of energy and she really believed in her students and wanted nothing but the best for them. I cleaned her home through high school and well beyond, she was not just someone I worked for but a good friend, a good listener, a great advisor of life, and someone I really looked up to. I will miss her terribly! If only the world was filled with Ms.Pipito's, we would all be in a much better place. May, you find peace in your hearts for your loss.

Dear Family of Nancy:

I was very saddened to learn of Nancy's passing. I worked with Nancy on the board of the Massachusetts Art Education Association. I first met Nancy when she was the President of the organization, and we were waiting in Penn Station for our respective late trains to arrive. The National Convention in NYC had just ended. I was new to the organization (just a member, not on the board), and fairly new to teaching in MA. Nancy kept me entertained for a few hours, until her train was called. I got to know her a little better a few years later, when I joined the board as Secondary Ed. rep. When she retired, she invited me to her home, and gave me some books that she thought my students might enjoy, as she was no longer using them. She even gave me a cookbook for my husband - who was a chef. (He loved it!) When I became President, Nancy was always supportive of new initiatives I unveiled, and shared her opinions - even when she disagreed. She only recently stopped participating in meetings; citing other obligations. I always found Nancy to be generous in spirit, and to be good company. I will miss having her join me for dinner at National Conventions and will miss her occasional emails. My condolences on your loss.

Dear Pipitos,

Mary Beth was over just last night and we were reminiscing about Nancy and our time with your family. We were just kids when we knew her, but Nancy was always so interested and kind to talk with when we saw her. I knew she was in Mass., but had forgotten that she was an art teacher. Doesn't that just make another reason and perfect sense as to why we loved her! We'll be sending good thoughts for her and you as you celebrate her life today-tomorrow. We only wish we could be there as well. Hugs and kisses to you all.

To the Pipito Family:

Ms. Pipito was a true inspiration in my life not only as an art teacher but as a member of my family. I can remember as a kid she took me to Filene's for a make over to help me as a young teenager. Even though my daughter did not have her as an art teacher, she was also a part of her life and an inspiration from the day she was born, more than 16 years ago. We will truly miss her. Our sincerest condolences to your family.

Sincerely,
Anna and Steffy Cardarelli

To Nancy's Family,
All of us in the world of Art Education were shocked and saddened to learn of Nancy's passing. For over 30 years, I went to Mass. Directors' meetings with Nancy, to National Conventions, and often, just lunch or dinner with friends. We emailed constantly and I enjoyed her wit and intelligence. Nancy was a colleague and friend. We shall all miss her very much.
