SOPHIE A. (SPIAK) CHAMPAGNE

Obituary Condolences

Sophie A. (Spiak) Champagne, 95, of Teresian House, Washington Avenue, Albany, NY, entered eternal rest September 29, 2011, at the Inn at St. Peter's Hospice, Albany, after a brief illness. Born February 15, 1916 in Cohoes, to the late Marco and Antoinette (Stopyra) Spiak, and educated in Cohoes schools, she was a member of St. Michael's Parish and belonged to its Rosary Society. She married Ernest Champagne of Cohoes in 1937 and raised a family of five. Sophie had several jobs in Cohoes, most notably working for several years as a clerk at the Commodore Cleaners, and spent several more years as a teacher's aide at the Abram Lansing School. She was a passionate golfer and a longtime member of the Frear Park Women's Golf League. Sophie retired to New Port Richey, FL, with her husband, Ernest, in 1982, and spent the next two-plus decades enjoying the camaraderie at the Magnolia Valley Golf Club there. She returned to the area in 2005 to spend the next five years residing at Millview of Latham. Sophie spent an eventful year as the president of the Millview Resident's Association and delighted in the organized activities and outings there, also contributing a variety of handmade goods to religious groups. In 2010, she moved to the Teresian House, where she enjoyed access to daily Mass, the bell choir, a variety of theme activities, and bingo. Sophie loved music, golf, and her family: her husband, the late Ernest C. Champagne; siblings, Jean (Wilfred) Mailloux of Clifton Park, the late Helen (Eugene) Miner of Poestenkill, and the late Joseph Spiak of Cape Coral, FL; daughters, Barbara Mitchell of Wilton, Mary (David) Vredenburg of Rotterdam, and the late Nancy Brandenberger of West Hartford, CT; and sons, Joseph (Zarina) Champagne of Jacksonville, FL, and David Champagne of Red Hook. In addition, she had 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Funeral, Monday 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, Cohoes where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in St. Michael's Cemetery, Waterford. Relatives and friends may call at the Dufresne Funeral Home, Inc., 216 Columbia Street, Cohoes, on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The family wishes to express its thanks to the staff and residents of the Millview Assisted Living Center of Latham, the Teresian House of Albany and St. Peter's Hospital and Hospice for Sophie's consistently excellent care and their friendship; she truly enjoyed all of you. Contributions may be made in Sophie's memory to the Teresian House of Albany or St. Peter's Hospice. For guest registry and directions, www.dufresnefuneralhome.com
