Robert (Bob) William Barito, of Louisville, died peacefully on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at age 82. Bob (a.k.a. Bibs) was born in Schenectady, NY, to Wilfred and Elizabeth Barito on January 22, 1928. He attended high school at La Salle Military Institute and graduated from Siena College with a BS in chemistry in 1949. Bob served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was married to his sweetheart, Mary O'Leary in 1952. After his discharge from the military in 1952, he started work at General Electric in Schenectady. In 1959, he earned an MS in chemistry from Union College. In 1964, Bob moved with his wife and children to Louisville, where he and Mary raised their seven children, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He retired from GE in 1988 after 35 years. As a chemist, Bob is best known for his ground-breaking work in the area of vacuum insulation. In his personal life, he will be remembered for his indefatigable commitment to his family and the positive energy he passed to anyone who knew him. Bob's humor and keen wit were a mainstay in his life. Bob was surrounded by his beloved family and friends at his passing. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary O. Barito; brother, Raymond (Vicky); sons, Paul (Carolan), Tom (Barb), Bob (Kellie), Joe (Margie) and Bill (Kate); and daughters, Teresa (David) and Maggie (Paul). His Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Arch L. Heady and Son Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Road.
