Lawrence Eugene Holcomb Obituary
Lawrence Eugene Holcomb SchenectadyDr. Lawrence (Larry) E. Holcomb, 48, a native of Schenectady, NY, died on Monday, April 21st. Dr. Holcomb was born on September 23, 1965 to Kingston and Belinda Holcomb. He was predeceased by his father and mother, who died in 1998 and 2006 respectively. He was a longtime resident of Lynn, Massachusetts. Larry graduated from Linton High School in 1983, earned a B.S. from Gordon College (Wenham, MA) in 1987, and received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University (Boston, MA) in 2003. He was an assistant professor of sociology at Gordon College for many years, and his exceptional intellect and thirst for knowledge were evident in his course instruction. He loved to encourage his students to develop ideas and curiosity about life, always challenging them to think beyond themselves and the obvious. Larry's work earned him recognition as an outstanding assistant professor. Larry was an avid reader and enjoyed writing articles and papers on various sociopolitical and cultural issues. He hosted his own blog, The American: Straight no Chaser, which was a medium to discuss current events. He loved the Boston Red Sox, movies, yoga, visits to Martha's Vineyard, and the company of his family and friends. Larry always was the life of the party. Larry also was a man of strong faith and studied the Bible. As a young man, he was affiliated with First Presbyterian Church, and more recently he attended Calvary Tabernacle, both in Schenectady, NY. To cherish his memory, Larry leaves his brother, Kingston C. Holcomb (Diane) of Baltimore, MD; six sisters, Shiela H. Smith of Wilmington, DE; Dr. Zelda J. Holcomb of Columbia, MD; Major (ret) Julia Holcomb, Robin H. Upshur (Frank), Octavia H. Tompkins (Alfred), all of Schenectady, NY; Susan K. Holcomb of Kingston, NY; and a host of nieces and nephews, great nephews and nieces, cousins, along with many loving friends.
