Edward L. Stumpf Jr. WestmereEdward L. Stumpf Jr., 88, of Westmere, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at his residence. Ed was enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. He became a CB with the Naval Construction Battalion at the Davisville, RI training center and was later shipped to Okinawa for the duration of the war. Later he was employed by the Nationwide Insurance Company. Ed joined the Westmere Volunteer Fire Department in 1956 and was a life member, serving for 58 years. He held the positions of chief, commissioner, and director throughout his career in the fire department. Ed was a past member of the Colonie Elks #2192 and the Pat Aiezza VFW Post. He was an avid golfer and loved bowling, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He cherished his time at camp at Sacandaga, trips to Florida and staying active with family activities. He is survived by his two children, Charlie (Mary) Stumpf of Guilderland and Marcia (Garen) Szablewski of Burnt Hills, and his brother, Roger (Penny) Stumpf. He is Pop to his grandchildren, E.C. (Maria) Stumpf II, Marisa (Connor) Stumpf Kearney M.D., Ryan Szablewski and Timothy Szablewski, and great-grandchildren, Maeve, Molly, and Ainsley Kearney. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Jennie Aiezza Stumpf; his parents, Edward L. and Hanna Stumpf, Sr.; his brother, Norman Stumpf , and his son, Jeffrey Stumpf. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Saturday afternoon, from 1 to 3 p.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. A service in celebration of Ed's life with Fire Departmental Honors will be held at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens.
