James M. DelPrete MechanicvilleJames M. DelPrete, Sr., 94, former Mechanicville police officer, died Friday, June 27th, at St. Peter's Hospice, Albany, after a brief illness. A native of Mechanicville, born March 11, 1920, son of Michael and Mary DelPrete, Jim enlisted in the US Navy soon after the U.S. entry into WW II, serving in the US Navy as a Pharmacists Mate 1st class. Returning home after the War, Jim worked shortly with the D & H Railroad, and started his police career in 1950. A well known and likeable patrolman, Jim retired in July 1976. A member of ITAM War Vets and Sons of Italy, both of Mechanicville, a former officer of the Mechanicville PBA, Jim enjoyed fishing, traveling, cribbage and especially spending time with his family and friends. Jim spent many winters in Florida, and eventually bought a home in Port Orange, FL some years ago. Predeceased by his wife, Rose DeChiro DelPrete, in 1996, and their twin son, Michael; his second wife, Shirley Overcash DelPrete; brothers, Angelo and Salvatore and sister, Anna DeStefano. Survivors include son, James and Paulette DelPrete Jr. and sister, Jennie Bright, all of Mechanicville; his canine companion, Dixie; stepchildren, Richard and Russell Overcash and Shirleen Hanson; nieces, nephews and their families. Also special friends, Vivian Perretta of Mechanicville, Anna Campana of Virginia and Joe Bablia of Florida. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial with military and police honors in St. Paul's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Mechanicville PBA in care of the funeral home.
