Bjorn Magnus Kaupang Ballston LakeBjorn Magnus Kaupang, 73, of Ballston Lake, NY passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born in Olso, Norway on Feb. 12, 1941 to Elise and Asbjorn Kaupang. He was the eldest of three children and was raised in Asker, Norway. He served briefly in the Norwegian military and graduated from the Norwegian Technical Institute in Trondheim, Norway with a master's degree in electrical engineering. He moved to the US in 1968 to start his career with General Electric. He was an accomplished engineer who worked for GE Power Systems until retiring in 1999. He primarily worked in Schenectady, but also spent time in Minneapolis, MN and Hong Kong. Bjorn married Martha Jean Hover on June 13, 1970, and became a US citizen in 1974. Bjorn is survived by his wife, Marti; and their three children, David (Stacey) Kaupang of Fort Collins, CO, Kristin Kaupang of Seattle, WA and Sandra (Carl) Forti of Alexandria, VA. He was proud of his seven grandchildren, Caitlin, Zachary and Brendan Forti, Kaija and Maren Kaupang, and Oliver and Mari Kaupang. He is also survived by his siblings, Sigrun Mogedal (Asker, Norway) and Terje Kaupang (Oslo, Norway) and many nieces and nephews. Bjorn was passionate about boats and fishing, and was an avid skier both on the water and snow. He traveled extensively for work and for pleasure. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and was extremely proud of his Norwegian heritage and family. He was a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church, the Schenectady Yacht Club, GE Retired Engineers, and the Sitzmarker Ski Club. A memorial will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7th at 11 a.m. at the Jonesville United Methodist Church (963 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, located at 965 Albany-Shaker Road, Latham, New York 12110 (http://regionalfoodbank.net).
