Mary Ann Thomas Boord Schenectady Mary Ann Thomas Boord, R.N., 72, of Nott St., died at home, Saturday, August 16, after being stricken. Born in Troy, Sept. 11, 1941, daughter of the late Peter and Marie Ricci Thomas, wife of the late Richard W. Boord and sister of the late Joseph Thomas, she grew up in Mechanicville and was a Class of 1959 graduate. She earned her B.S. degree in Nursing from Niagara University in 1963, and a M.S. degree in Health Science Education from Russell Sage College in 1976. Mary Ann started her nursing career as a Public Health Nurse for Saratoga County, 1963-65, school nurse/teacher at Mechanicville primary school from 1965-67. Practical nursing instructor first for Schenectady School district vocational dept., 1969-70, and later for BOCES at Linton and Albany Vo-Tec Centers from 1975 until retirement in 1990. A member of the Schenectady branch AAUW (University Women) since 1968, serving on the Board of Directors and active in many study and interest groups. Proud member of Delta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Member of Schenectady/Albany/Schoharie Faculty Assoc., NY State United Teachers Assoc., American Federation of Teachers and Schenectady County Retired Teachers Assoc. She was a faithful member of Our Lady of Fatima (Kateri Tekakwitha) Church in Schenectady and served on the Parish Council and various committees. A wonderful, warm, thoughtful and caring woman, Mary Ann was the epitome of what all of us would want a relative and friend to be like. Though plagued with numerous debilitating illness's, she lived her life to the fullest, with an assist from her late husband, children, siblings, close friends and home health aides, being as independent as possible. Survivors include sons, Francis and Heather Elia of New Woodstock, NY, Peter and Laura Elia of Rochester; along with her cherished granddaughter, Julianna Rose Elia, Lawrence (Barbara) Boord; daughter, Kathleen DiCaprio; sister-in-law, Maryann Thomas and her daughters, Joan Hopeck, Joelle Carmichael and Jaclyn Jones and their children. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, 2216 Rosa Rd., Schenectady, with burial at St. Paul's Cemetery, Mechanicville. Calling hours at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., Schenectady on Monday from 4to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to either NY Chapter , Pine West Bldg 2, Suite 204, Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12205 or NE Assoc of the Blind, 301 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12205, in loving memory of Mary Ann.
